Our recycling facilities literally hold the key to conserving our natural resources. Our “green” shows when:
We methodically clean and sort all scrap before shipping. That means safely and efficiently removing fluids, CFC’s, mercury switches and other items from vehicles and appliances that could harm the environment. In fact, as part of the Nucor Corporation, we led a nationwide movement to remove mercury switches found in older model cars before they are recycled. In fact, as of early 2017, DJJ and its recycling locations have recovered more than 240,000 mercury switches, resulting in over 500 lbs of mercury being recovered. If not recovered, this mercury would have been released to the air and contributed to pollution of our waterways. Through our comprehensive source control programs, we continually screen to stop potentially hazardous materials from entering our facilities. In fact, all our operations employ the industry’s most comprehensive radiation detection equipment and procedures.
Interested in reducing greenhouse gas emissions? Look no further than recycling steel. According to the EPA, every ton of steel made from recycling steel nets an overall reduction of 0.49 metric tons of carbon equivalent (MTCE) into the environment. When you recycle tens of millions of tons of scrap every year, this adds up to a significant environmental benefit.
DJJ Environmental Related Tasks topped 6,000
In 2016, DJJ teammates completed nearly 6,400 individual environmental related tasks. Our recycling facilities are among the most environmentally advanced in the industry. In addition to routine inspections for environmental compliance, each facility receives a detailed annual inspection that evaluates all aspects of our environmental performance. DJJ’s environmental management system extends to each of our operating facilities and our trading network.
DJJ Earns Environmental Awards
DJJ companies were proud recipients of several environmental awards during 2016, including the Nucor President’s Environmental Award, the DJJ President’s Environmental Award, and the Colorado Environmental Leadership Program Gold Leader award.
