DJJ helps preserve and protect the environment

DJJ is America’s oldest, most experienced trading, logistics and scrap recycling company. Since 1885, we’ve focused on recycling one of the world’s most reusable materials while conserving precious resources in the process. As a company founded on the idea that metal from old products should go into new products rather than landfills, DJJ operates in such a way that we minimize our negative impact on the earth and the people we share it with, doing our best to preserve the world in its healthiest form for future generations.

Can a scrap yard help save the Earth?

Well-maintained with state of the art equipment and customer-friendly employees, our recycling facilities defy expectations of what a scrap yard should look like. But it’s on the inside where you’ll find our greenest initiatives. First and foremost, you’ll see sustainability in action.  Our recycling facilities literally hold the key to conserving our natural resources.  Our “green” shows when:

  • We methodically clean and sort all scrap before shipping.  That means safely and efficiently removing fluids, CFC’s, mercury switches and other items from vehicles and appliances that could harm the environment. In fact, as part of the Nucor Corporation, we led a nationwide movement to remove mercury switches found in older model cars before they are recycled. In fact, as of early 2017, DJJ and its recycling locations have recovered more than 240,000 mercury switches, resulting in over 500 lbs of mercury being recovered. If not recovered, this mercury would have been released to the air and contributed to pollution of our waterways. Through our comprehensive source control programs, we continually screen to stop potentially hazardous materials from entering our facilities. In fact, all our operations employ the industry’s most comprehensive radiation detection equipment and procedures.

  • Interested in reducing greenhouse gas emissions? Look no further than recycling steel. According to the EPA, every ton of steel made from recycling steel nets an overall reduction of 0.49 metric tons of carbon equivalent (MTCE) into the environment. When you recycle tens of millions of tons of scrap every year, this adds up to a significant environmental benefit.

DJJ Environmental Related Tasks topped 6,000

In 2016, DJJ teammates completed nearly 6,400 individual environmental related tasks. Our recycling facilities are among the most environmentally advanced in the industry. In addition to routine inspections for environmental compliance, each facility receives a detailed annual inspection that evaluates all aspects of our environmental performance. DJJ’s environmental management system extends to each of our operating facilities and our trading network.

DJJ Earns Environmental Awards

DJJ companies were proud recipients of several environmental awards during 2016, including the Nucor President’s Environmental Award, the DJJ President’s Environmental Award, and the Colorado Environmental Leadership Program Gold Leader award. These awards recognize entities that go beyond the environmental regulations and reach towards the goal of sustainability.

    million tons

the amount of scrap recycled in the US every year

Over 70 million tons of scrap are recycled in the U.S. annually.

  • 2 out of 3 pounds of steel made in the U.S. is manufactured using ferrous scrap.

  • Recycling 1 ton of steel conserves 2,500 pounds of iron ore, 1,400 pounds of coal and 120 pounds of limestone.

  • Recycling 1 ton of aluminum conserves more than 5 metric tons of bauxite ore and 14 megawatt hours of electricity.

These energy savings translate into:

  • Millions of tons of reduced greenhouse gas emissions due to significantly less energy needed to manufacture products from recyclables versus virgin materials…and avoiding landfill use.

  • Substantial reductions in environmental impacts from mining.

  • Cleaner streams and rivers thanks to reduced pollutants discharged from both ferrous and nonferrous manufacturing mills.

The best technology to harness the ultimate renewable resource.

Every year, our nation generates over 70 million tons of scrap material that – if not recycled – could end up in landfills. Converting this scrap metal into a valuable replacement for virgin raw materials while still protecting the environment takes more than hard work.  It takes the most innovative technology available. Which is exactly what you’ll find at our 65-plus U.S. recycling facilities.djj-technology-side1

  • Our ferrous recycling uses high efficiency shredders, balers, shears and sorting equipment.
  • Our nonferrous recycling processes include baling, wire recovery, briquetting, shearing, accurately sorting alloys, custom packaging and toll coversion arrangements.
  • Our sophisticated sortation system uses state-of-the-art technology to ensure that virtually every ounce of metal is extracted during the recycling process…and not sent to landfills.
  • Our patented on-line bulk scrap analyzers accurately determine the chemistry of scrap grades, reducing the variability in scrap charges.  This process also allows us to certify the content of key elements critical to our customers.
  • Our proprietary software helps steel mill customers optimize scrap charges to produce the lowest cost liquid steel to exacting specifications.

Together, these technologies are helping us make important steps towards achieving our ultimate goal: zero waste heading into landfills.
