Also called skimmer iron. In an integrated steel mill, the hot metal (liquid pig iron) is desulferized. The resulting slag from this process must be removed and is skimmed off the hot metal charging ladle. During the skimming process, iron is lost as well as the slag. Material is processed and the iron is separated from the slag. Material is very dependent on processing, with high sulfers in poorly processed material. |
