Environmental Commitment
The recycling of scrap steel alone is responsible for saving enough energy to power about 18 million homes annually (Steel Recycling Institute, 2006). Aluminum produced from used beverage cans requires 90-95% less energy than aluminum produced from bauxite ore. These savings translate into millions of tons of reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, substantial reductions to impacts to the environment from mining, and cleaner streams and rivers from reduced pollutants discharged from both ferrous and non-ferrous manufacturing mills. DJJ is proud of its contributions to this industry. As an effort to assist in the reduction of mercury emissions from steel making, DJJ fully supports the National Vehicle Mercury As both a Broker and Processor of scrap metal, DJJ strongly encourages its suppliers to participate in and support the NVMSRP. DJJ communicates this commitment to its suppliers and encourages them to learn more about this beneficial program. Additional information on the NVMSRP can be found at www.elvsolutions.org. DJJ’s scrap processing facilities have implemented a source control program to assure removal of Convenient Light Switch Assemblies prior to receipt of automobiles for shredding.
