Environmental Commitment

The David J. Joseph Company is committed to operating its facilities and businesses in an environmentally responsible manner. As an industry leader, our goal is to minimize the environmental impacts of our operations by increasing electrical and mechanical efficiencies, developing and testing more efficient separation processes, and controlling the potential impacts of our businesses on the environment.

The recycling of scrap steel alone is responsible for saving enough energy to power about 18 million homes annually (Steel Recycling Institute, 2006). Aluminum produced from used beverage cans requires 90-95% less energy than aluminum produced from bauxite ore. These savings translate into millions of tons of reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, substantial reductions to impacts to the environment from mining, and cleaner streams and rivers from reduced pollutants discharged from both ferrous and non-ferrous manufacturing mills.

DJJ is proud of its contributions to this industry. As an effort to assist in the reduction of mercury emissions from steel making, DJJ fully supports the National Vehicle Mercury Switch Recovery Program (NVMSRP). The NVMSRP is a national partnership among steelmakers, scrap suppliers, vehicle manufacturers, environmental groups, the Environmental Council of States, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. There goal is to remove and recover mercury containing switches from end-of-life vehicles before they enter the scrap supply stream.

As both a Broker and Processor of scrap metal, DJJ strongly encourages its suppliers to participate in and support the NVMSRP. DJJ communicates this commitment to its suppliers and encourages them to learn more about this beneficial program. Additional information on the NVMSRP can be found at www.elvsolutions.org.

DJJ’s scrap processing facilities have implemented a source control program to assure removal of Convenient Light Switch Assemblies prior to receipt of automobiles for shredding.

Little did Joseph Joseph know that the small scrap business he began in 1885 would grow into a leading scrap broker and processor 125 years later! DJJ continues to build our reputation on the same cornerstones as our founder: integrity, reliability, innovation and quality.
